Movie Review: Splice (2009)
Elsa and Clive, two young rebellious scientists, defy legal and ethical boundaries and forge ahead with a dangerous experiment: splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism. Named “Dren”, the creature rapidly develops from a deformed female infant into a beautiful but dangerous winged human-chimera, who forges a bond with both of her creators – only to have that bond turn deadly.
This movie is an interesting idea and somewhat realistic if you think about it. We humans are always trying to mess with Mother Nature. Remember back in 1996 when we cloned a sheep, Dolly? The sheep only lived for six years and even had six babies. Splice piggybacks off of that idea but takes it a bit farther.
The creature in the movie, Dren, was a mix of salamander, kangaroo, bird, fish, horse, stingray and human. I can’t recall if it was never explained why these animals were chosen for the merge, but I don’t think there was an actual logical method for selection, it seemed random.
The movie really just seemed like an excuse for Adrien Brody to get down with a non-human creature. On one hand, the freak scene is unnecessary to have and not related to the story. But on the other hand. I think we all know that if there is an opportunity to try something strange, someone is going to take it.
It’s worth a watch even if it’s just for the shock value.
I’m pretty sure that the movie Splice (2009) was made around one particular scene. When you see it, you will know. Coconuts In The Bay
