Movie Review: Life (2017)

A team of astronauts aboard a Space Station orbiting Earth, discover a single-celled organism from Mars, which they initially view as a scientific breakthrough. They did the smart thing and studied the creature in space instead of risking contamination on Earth. However, the organism quickly evolved from a harmless being to a more menacing threat.

At first, the alien was very dormant, very docile, very cute. Thirty minutes into the movie, cute little Calvin, that’s what they named it, becomes a murderous threat to the crew. But it’s not little Calvin’s fault, he is just a bit hungry, trying his best to find food.

The alien design was cool, instead of making it human-like or having a skeleton like most alien we see on the big screen, it was an invertebrate, had no bones, it was all muscle, kinda like a space octopus. This flexible body allowed it to squeeze through small spaces and made for the best game of cat-and-mouse ever.

Once the movie action started happening, it never stopped. It builds tension and creates a sense of urgency to contain the alien at all costs before it can cause irreversible damage. The climax offers a shocking turn that leaves a lasting impression.

Side Note: This movie was good. But it didn’t do so well at the box office. Unfortunately, it was released at the same time as some really big blockbuster hits, so Life didn’t get the respect or attention it deserved.

Life was released at the same time as: Get Out, The Lego Batman Movie, John Wick: Chapter 2, Beauty and the Beast, and Logan.

The movie Life (2019) teaches us to just leave aliens alone, no matter how cute and innocent they seem at first. Coconuts In The Bay
