Movie Review: Train to Busan (2016)
Imagine you’re a man (Gong Yoo) on a train ride with his daughter, just minding your own business. Now, toss in a zombie apocalypse and you’ve got Train to Busan, the film that takes “Are we there yet?” to a whole new level of panic.
The zombie infestation hits Seoul, South Korea just as the train leaves for Busan. and what better place to have a zombie apocalypse than on a train? It’s Snowpiercer meets World War Z, but better. I can appreciate that most of the scenes took place in the daylight, which is great because too many horror flicks are shot in the dark and sometimes that can be hard to see. If it’s done correctly, you don’t need the dark to scare people.
The zombies look awesome, they move faster than a toddler on a sugar high, but the infection moves even faster. They’re the kind of undead that really get you thinking: “Would I survive a zombie apocalypse? This plus being trapped on a train is easy nightmare fuel.
The writing was fantastic and the character development was on point. You actually care what happens to the riders – well, most of them. This might be the first zombie movie to make you cry.
This movie is a wild ride that blends horror and heartfelt moments seamlessly. By the time the train finally pulls into Busan, the film ends on a note that’ll stick with you for a while. Very enjoyable to watch all the way through to the end.
Side Note: Just a heads up. The movie is in Korean, so there are English subtitles. I know for me, I have to be in the mood to watch a subtitled movie, I don’t care how good it is. Not even if it is the winner for best picture of the years, like Parasite.
Train to Busan (2016) is the first zombie movie that got me misty-eyed. Coconuts In The Bay
